Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Elmhurst Energy Accreditation

Overview

As an Accredited Energy Assessor, it is a DCLG requirement to carry out a specified number of hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in each accreditation year in order to maintain your accredited status. This is stipulated in Section 7 of the Elmhurst Accreditation Scheme’s Code of Conduct and is a Government requirement.

What is CPD?
CPD involves participating in additional learning activities to keep skills up to date or to widen your knowledge in certain subjects. The amount of CPD required will depend on how many different strands the Assessor is accredited on. 10 hours of CPD per accreditation year is required for the first strand that the surveyor is accredited on. If they are accredited on additional strands an extra 5 hours of CPD per strand will be required. NDEA Level 3, 4 and DECs will count as one strand. As an example, if you are accredited as a DEA and an NDEA you will need to provide us with 15 hours of CPD.

It is best practice to plan and record your CPD throughout your accreditation year, as this will enable you to take full advantage of the different CPD routes you can complete in order to find the best study subjects for you personally. CPD should be beneficial to yourself, filling any gaps in your knowledge on subjects which you may not be completely up to speed on, so that you gain something from the study rather than it becoming the chore that you need to do just to complete the mandatory hours.

The CPD study which you complete should consist of at least 50% energy related matter, the other 50% could be for non-energy subjects, such as other aspects of building construction or wider business related topics (time management, marketing, health and safety etc)

In line with DCLG new guidelines you can no longer count changes in requirements (eg software updates) towards your mandatory CPD hours for more information please click here to see our updated CPD policy.

Obtaining CPD

There are several different ways of obtaining CPD throughout the year, a number of which are free of charge.

  • From October 2010 some of our communications, for example our newsletters, will carry a CPD logo. Where the CPD logo is shown on a newsletter or communication you will also be able to see an allotted amount of time you can claim as CPD. This will build over the year and will be completely free of charge. All you will need to do is to make a note of it on your CPD Log once you have read the document.

  • Elmhurst CPD courses – We offer a wide range of CPD courses that cover a variety of topics. Courses are offered at our Training Centre in Lutterworth and at other venues throughout the UK. Each course counts as 5 hours CPD. For further details regarding courses click here.

  • Elmhurst Regional Seminars – We have been running some regional seminars which have been providing updates on current developments and challenges within the Energy Assessment Industry. These events are very informative and you also have the obvious advantage of meeting and talking to other Energy Assessors, and may benefit from sharing each other’s experiences. The seminars are led by Mr Stephen O’Hara, Dr Gavin Dunn and Mr Neil Buckley all of whom have a wealth of experience and expertise in this sector. If you attended any of these seminars you can claim 5 hours of CPD. Further seminars are being planned in various different locations, so if you wish to attend one of these seminars or require any further information please contact Elmhurst Energy on 01455 883250.

  • Online CPD with Elmhurst – Our online CPD modules can be easily found in our Members Area. Access to them is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The CPD subjects are diverse and of a high standard. There are 9 or 10 modules in each series and you will need to read the modules and complete 8 out of 10 questions correctly in order to gain a CPD certificate for 5 hours. These modules are most suited to NDEA assessors.

  • CPD Events (Energy Expo, Eco build) - These are an excellent way of keeping up to date with the latest developments in the Energy Industry and are very informative. It is up to the individual Assessor to decide on the number of CPD hours, this should depend on how many seminars or presentations you attended at the event. If Elmhurst are attending the event we assess the number of hours we will allow and issue a certificate on the day with the amount of time you can claim for CPD.

  • Elmhurst aim to provide many wide and varied ways of obtaining your CPD throughout the accreditation year however we are flexible in our attitude and we will accept CPD that you may wish to carry out with other training providers. In addition to this we will accept structured reading as CPD, but this should be accompanied by a synopsis of learning which lists the topics covered, what you have learned from your study and the number of hours claimed.

Recording CPD
We have developed a form (AP18) to help you record your CPD. You can obtain this form by either clicking here or by visiting the Documents Download section in the Members Area. The use of this form is not mandatory if you wish to use some other way of recording your CPD, however this record should be maintained meeting or exceeding the detail required on the Elmhurst log. It is best practice to update your CPD log on an ongoing basis as the study is completed, this way any study you have carried out does not get forgotten or missed. CPD will no longer be requested when you renew your accreditation, however it is still a mandatory CLG requirement that you complete the required Number of hours within each accreditation year. It will be vital to keep your CPD up to date as when you are selected for audit, you will have 28 days to supply it to us.
